When Is the Best Time to Schedule an Heirloom Portrait?

Heirloom

As parents, it’s easy to assume there will always be more time.

More time before the toddler curls disappear. More time before the missing front teeth grow in. More time before your child suddenly looks older somehow — even though you can’t quite pinpoint when it happened.

That’s often why families wait longer than they intended to schedule Heirloom Portraits.

If you’re wondering about the ideal age for heirloom portraits, you may also enjoy my earlier post, When Should You Take an Heirloom Portrait? This post has a slightly different focus: when you should actually begin planning and scheduling the experience.

In most cases, the answer is simpler than parents expect.

The Best Time Is Before You Think You Need It

Children change quietly and continuously. One day, their expressions, tiny features, and mannerisms feel so familiar that it’s hard to imagine them ever looking different. Then suddenly, a season has passed.

The soft roundness of early childhood gives way to a more grown-up face. Baby curls are gone after a haircut. A gap-toothed grin disappears almost overnight. Even a child’s thoughtful seriousness at a certain age can be surprisingly fleeting.

These are often the details parents miss most later on.

That’s part of what makes Heirloom Portraits so meaningful. They preserve who the child is during a very specific moment in childhood.

Heirloom Portraits Can Happen Any Time of Year

Many parents automatically think about portraits in the fall, especially if they are used to scheduling annual family photos for holiday cards. But Heirloom Portraits are different from outdoor seasonal sessions.

They are created in the studio with a timeless, classic style, which means that Heirloom Portraits can be created beautifully at any time of year.

In fact, spring and summer are often wonderful times to schedule them. Family calendars may feel slightly less compressed, children are sometimes more relaxed when they are bundling and unbundling in sweaters and coats, and there is more time to thoughtfully plan finished artwork before the holidays arrive.

Scheduling earlier in the year can also make the experience feel calmer and less rushed.

Timing Matters More Than Season

The best timing often depends more on your child’s rhythm and personality than on the season.

Heirloom Portrait sessions go most smoothly when the child is rested, comfortable, and knows what to expect. They do best when the experience feels calm and unhurried.

I guide parents through the process ahead of time. We talk about clothing, how the studio will look, and how the session will run. The sessions themselves are intentionally simple, short, and child-focused. Children do not need to perform or force smiles for beautiful portraits to happen.

Often, the most meaningful images come from quiet expressions and genuine moments of connection.

If You Want Finished Artwork for a Special Occasion, Plan Ahead

Some families schedule Heirloom Portraits before a milestone birthday or in time for holiday gifts for grandparents. Others want custom artwork ready for a newly renovated home or nursery.

Heirloom Portraits are designed to become finished artwork. The process includes planning, photographing the session, and selecting images for final products. I handle all the product production for you and deliver the final artwork to your home. At the end of the session, I show you samples of wall art and tabletop art for you to think about before your Selection appointment.

Whenever possible, I recommend beginning the process a few months before you hope to enjoy the final artwork. Planning ahead allows the experience to feel thoughtful and relaxed from beginning to end.

There’s Rarely a “Perfect” Time

Life with children is busy by definition. Schedules fill up quickly, and it’s easy to assume there will be a better time next season or next year.

But childhood keeps moving forward.

That’s why Heirloom Portraits become so treasured over time. They preserve the small details that are so easy to overlook while you are living them every day.

One day, the portrait hanging on your wall will remind you what your child looked like at this age.

AND it will remind you who they were.
