Headshot vs. Portrait: What’s the Difference and Which Do You Need?

headshot vs. portrait - what's the difference

If you’ve ever found yourself wondering whether you need a headshot or a portrait, you’re not alone. The words are often used interchangeably, but in truth, they represent two very different types of photography with very different goals.

In my studio, I create both with care and intention, but each serves a different purpose. Understanding the difference will help you choose the right experience and the right finished result for your needs.

The Look: Simple Professionalism vs. Storytelling Artistry

A headshot is clean, classic, and straightforward. It’s a close-up of your head and shoulders, typically photographed on a clean, simple background. The goal is to highlight yourself in a way that feels natural and confident. Your expression, posture, and eye contact all work together to project competence, credibility, and professionalism.

A portrait, on the other hand, tells more of your story. It may include more (or all) of your body, and the background plays a larger role. The setting might be timeless and minimal, or rich with texture and meaning. Portraits are expressive and artistic—they reveal more of who you are and the relationships that define your life. You might choose individual portraits of yourself only, or include your family in some as well.

The Purpose: Digital Presence vs. Tangible Legacy

Headshots live primarily online. They are the image you use on LinkedIn, your company website, or speaking bios—anywhere you want to make a polished first impression. They also appear in printed brochures or marketing materials, helping others instantly recognize and remember you.

Portraits, however, are meant to be seen and enjoyed every day, not just scrolled past. They become finished products—framed wall art that makes your home feel more personal, or custom-designed albums and portrait boxes that preserve your family’s story. Portraits aren’t just about what you look like; they’re about what and who you love most.

The Process: Efficient and Guided vs. Thoughtful and Collaborative

A headshot session is singular and efficient. Once you book, you’ll receive my Headshot Session Guide, which includes clothing and grooming tips to help you arrive prepared and knowing what to expect. On session day, we’ll capture a variety of expressions and poses—perhaps with a change of outfit—so you’ll have multiple options to choose from.

A portrait session, by contrast, is a more personal and collaborative experience. Before we ever pick up the camera, we’ll meet in your home to discuss what you’d like to capture, how you want your portraits to feel, and where you might like to display them. I’ll guide you through wardrobe, styling, and even how to arrange the finished artwork on your walls. The goal is to make the process seamless and enjoyable while creating something meaningful and timeless.

The Investment: Digital Flexibility vs. Custom Artwork

Both headshots and portraits begin with a session fee, but how you purchase your images is quite different.

For headshots, the pricing is straightforward. Each image has the same fee, which allows you to purchase as many images as you’d like. This is perfect for professionals who want a variety of expressions or outfits for different uses. I offer packages of 3, 5, or 10 images that give you a bit of a discount.

Portraits are priced based on the finished artwork you select. Framed wall portraits, albums, and portrait boxes are all custom-designed to complement your home and your aesthetic. The value lies not just in the images themselves but also in the craftsmanship of the final piece that will be displayed and cherished well into the future. The pricing varies with size and treatment.
