As a portrait and headshot photographer, I meet people from all walks of life. Headshot clients are generally on a search for new opportunities. In my time time volunteering with Portraits for Patriots, where I photograph transitioning service members, my clients are making a major change in their lives. I just photographed my 40th service member and I have been thinking about all I have learned and how much I admire those who have dedicated themselves to serving our country.
Before I began volunteering, I had only a superficial knowledge of the military. Working with these service members has opened my eyes to the remarkable responsibility they’ve taken on at a younger age than their civilian counterparts. Many of them have held leadership roles, managed teams, and carried out complex tasks that would challenge anyone, regardless of age or experience. I’ve been consistently impressed by their dedication, humility, and willingness to embrace new opportunities as they transition to civilian life.
Meeting each person has been a real pleasure. I’ve enjoyed hearing their stories and learning about their diverse backgrounds and ambitions for the future. Whether they’re aiming for a career in business, technology, or public service, they all share a desire to put their skills to use in new ways. My goal during each session is to help them see how their professional image can support their next chapter.
Coaching someone on their first professional headshot after years in uniform requires a thoughtful approach. We discuss what kind of work they hope to do and how they want to present themselves in the civilian world. I guide them on choosing the right attire, highlighting their best side, and finding an expression that projects confidence and approachability. Yes, it’s a photo for LinkedIn, but it’s also a representation of who they are now and who they aspire to become.
Reflecting on these sessions, I feel grateful to play a small part in helping service members take the next step in their journey. Each portrait tells a story of commitment, resilience, and new beginnings. It’s an honor to capture that moment for them.
