How this DC Children’s Photographer Helps Children Feel Comfortable During Photoshoots

As a parent, you want your child to feel at ease and enjoy being in front of the camera during a photoshoot.

I’m a parent myself, and as a DC children’s photographer, I know that there is one simple key to capturing the best portraits of your child: making sure they feel comfortable!

Once a child can relax and be themselves, we can capture their true personalities and genuine, joyful moments. I have a few tricks up my sleeve to help even the shyest child relax and have some fun. In fact, some of my favorite candids are when your child is giggling and being silly.

So, here’s how I ensure your little one feels relaxed and has fun during the session.

How Do You Help My Child Feel Comfortable During the Photoshoot?

Engaging Conversations and Playful Guesses

One of the first things I do to break the ice is talk with your child. But it’s not just any conversation—I like to make silly, over-the-top guesses about them that are sure to get a laugh. Whether it’s guessing that their favorite vegetable is rutabaga or about their pets at home, these playful exchanges are designed to get them giggling and forget all about the camera.

By making the interaction fun and light-hearted, I help shift their focus away from the fact that they’re being photographed and onto the fun we’re having together. This helps to bring out those natural smiles and expressions that make for great photos.

Asking About Their World

Children love to talk about their favorite things, whether it’s a beloved pet, a cherished toy, or a new hobby. I make it a point to ask questions about these aspects of their lives, giving them the chance to share what excites them. This not only helps to build a connection between us but also allows me to capture genuine reactions and enthusiasm as they tell me their answers.

When children are engaged in talking about something they love, they tend to be more relaxed and forget about any nerves they might have about being in front of the camera.

Offering Fun Incentives

Who doesn’t love a prize? To keep the session light and fun, I let children know that they’ll get to choose a prize when we’re done. Sometimes, I even offer a second prize as an extra treat. This gives them something to look forward to and helps keep their spirits high throughout the session.

But the fun doesn’t stop there. I also like to offer a yummy surprise for them to take home as a special reward for their great work during the photoshoot. These little incentives make the experience feel more like a game than a formal photoshoot, helping them stay engaged and happy.

Creating a Relaxed Atmosphere

I believe that a relaxed atmosphere is essential for a successful photoshoot, especially when children are involved. From the moment we start, I work to create an environment where your child feels comfortable to be themselves. Whether it’s allowing them to explore the location, answering their questions about my equipment, or just giving them space to warm up to the idea of being photographed, I tailor the experience to suit their needs.

My goal is to make the session feel like a fun, playful experience rather than a staged event. This approach not only helps in capturing genuine smiles and candid moments but also ensures that your child leaves with positive memories of the experience.
